Description

Gowin Valley Farms offers organic grow your own mushroom kits! Our 5+ lb sawdust blocks are the perfect way to harvest edible mushrooms anywhere! Each block is prepared in our sterile laboratory using a high quality enriched sawdust formula blend with USDA certified organic grain typically rye, wheat or millet depending on the specific species.

Our sawdust blocks are great for beginners interested in trying mycology and can be fruited on a countertop in your home, your computer desk at work, or any other flat surface that can accommodate enough room for your mushrooms to thrive. Once receiving our grow your own mushroom kit, slice an opening in the bag where you would like to initiate fruiting. Using a spray bottle, mist your kit several times per day and within just a few days mushrooms will start to form. When the mushroom pins start developing, you will continue to see exponential growth in a very brief period of time. 6-12 days after opening your grow kit your gourmet mushrooms will be ready to harvest. Harvest by simply pulling your mushroom cluster from the bottom of the stem and tear away from the bag. Make sure to remove any of the substrate that might be left behind before prepping for your culinary masterpiece.

Be sure to keep your kit moist after your first harvest and continue to spray it with water each day to promote additional flushes. Each kit will produce between 2-4 mushroom harvests and should yield between 1.5-4 lbs. We are happy to answer any questions you might have about growing mushrooms at home or grow kits. Please email gowinvaleyfarms@gmail.com with questions. Good luck on your next grow!

Blue Oyster (Pleurotus Ostreatus)

Blue Oyster mushrooms are one of the fastest growing commercial mushrooms species. They are also packed with tons of nutrients and natural antioxidants that have amazing health benefits. They begin their life cycle as dark blue mushroom pins that quickly progress into beautiful gray clusters. Having a strong light source on the mushrooms while growing will help to keep more of a dark color density as they form. Most mushrooms need light and fresh air exchange to grow and Blue Oysters are no exception. Keeping a fan by your grow kit also helps with keeping C02 levels down and will promote thicker mushroom stems.

Bear’s Head (Hericium Americanum)

Bear’s Head is a tooth fungus which expresses itself in large clusters. It is most often mistaken by amateur mycologists for Lion’s Mane (Hericium Erinaceus) but is in fact it’s own species even though it shares the Hericium genus . Bear’s Head produce large dense pom-pom clusters which have a mild seafood-like taste. Bear’s Head is a cousin species to Lion’s Mane and may potentially share some of the same medicinal qualities but has not been studied as prolifically. The strain we offer was originally cultivated by Ryan Paul Gates of Terrestrial Fungi and was found on Beech (Fagus grandifolia) in Sterling Heights, MI.

Chestnut Mushroom (Pholiota Adiposa)

Chestnut mushrooms originated in Europe and are known for their profound “nutty” flavor. They are widely cultivated in Japan and known to be a top choice edible mushroom. They tend to take a bit longer than Oyster mushrooms to produce. You can expect to get two separate flushes of chestnut mushrooms from your grow kit about 3 weeks apart. Polysaccharides extracted from the mycelial culture of P. adiposa and administered into white mice at a dosage of 300 mg/kg inhibited the growth of Sarcoma 180 and Ehrlich solid cancers by 70% and 60%, respectively (Ohtsuka et al., 1973).

Below are some of the many health benefits of Chestnut mushrooms :
